Part 1: The Qabalistic Cross

Imagine yourself growing bigger and bigger to encompass the entire space of the Universe. Reach up and from the heavens draw down the light of the stars into the self.

Step 1: Start by facing East and bring down said light from above you to touch the forehead and say Ateh (Ah-Tah)

Step 2: Touch heart center and say Aiwass (Eye-uhh-waaz)

Step 3: Touching the genitals and say Malkuth (Mahl-kooth)

Step 4: Touching the right shoulder and say ve-Geburah (v'ge-boo-rah)

Step 5: Touching the left shoulder and say ve-Gedulah (v'ge-doo-lah)

Step 6: Clasping the hands upon the breast, say le-Olahm (lay-oh-lahm), Amen

*The above translates to “Unto Thee/ The Kingdom/ and the Power/ and the Glory/ to the Ages, Amen”


Part 2: The Pentagrams

Still facing East, make the Earth Pentagram with either the Wand, Dagger, or your fingers. This pentagram should be seen as a blue flame in the mind's eye. With you right hand, draw a line in front of you beginning at your left hip, up to before your Third Eye Chakra, back down to the right hip, up the left shoulder, across the chest to the right shoulder, and back down to the left hip. Vibrate the corresponding God Name and when doing so, make The Sign of the Enterer given by stepping forward with the right leg, hands stretched out in front of you and piercing the pentagram of blue. After vibrating* each name, give the Sign of Silence given by balling up the left hand, thumb extended, and place the top of your thumb placed on your bottom lip. Lastly, trace a line connecting the center of the first pentagram to the next and continuing doing so to connect all 4 pentagrams to each other. 


Step 1: Facing East, vibrate the name YHVH (Yod Heh Vau Heh)

Step 2: Turning to the South, the same, but say ADNI (Ah-Doh-Nye)

Step 3: Turning to the West, the same, but say EHIH (Eh-Hey-Yay)

Step 4: Turning to the North, the same, but say AGLA (Ah-Gah-La)

*Vibrate ie. as in when chanting “OM” and from the diaphragm, say each syllable with equal duration.


Part 3: Invoking the Archangels

Step 1: Extend the arms in the form of a Cross and Vibrate the Archangel names while imagining their images in their corresponding directions.

  • Before me Raphael; (Tip: Air, so feel a gust of wind on your face)

  • Behind me Gabriel; (Tip: Water, so feel mist upon your back)

  • On my right hand Michael; (Tip: Fire, so feel heat on your right)

  • On my left hand Auriel; (Tip: Earth, so feel the coldness of soil on your left)


Step 2: Imagine yourself in the center of a circle of 4 blue Pentagrams as well as in the middle of a column of red light with a red Hexagram above you and another below. Then state the following:

  • For about me flames the Pentagram,

  • And in the Column shines the six-rayed Star.


Part 4: Closing Qabalistic Cross

Step 1: Repeat the Qabalistic Cross, imagining drawing down red light energy into your heart center and filling you up with holy divine light.

Resh is a series of Solar Adorations that are given at the four stages of the Sun every single day: Sunrise (or upon waking), Noon, Sunset, and Midnight (or before bed). These vary slightly and are each aligned with a particular Element. While reciting each stanza, make sure to give the appropriate sign and assume the appropriate godform. After saying each stanza, follow it up with an Adoration that is the same regardless of the Sun Station. 


  1. Sunrise who is East who is Ra who is the element of Air

  2. Noon who is South who is Ahathoor who is the element of Fire

  3. Sunset who is West who is Tum who is the element of Water

  4. Midnight who is North who is Khephra who is the element of Earth


At Sunrise, imagine you becoming Ra and give the Sign of Osiris Slain: 

Hail unto Thee who art Ra in Thy rising, even unto Thee who art Ra in Thy strength, who travellest over the Heavens in Thy bark at the Uprising of the Sun. Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm. Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Night!


At Noon, become Ahathoor and give the Sign of Thoum-aesh-neith:

Hail unto Thee who art Ahathoor in Thy triumphing, even unto Thee who art Ahathoor in Thy beauty, who travellest over the Heavens in thy bark at the Mid-course of the Sun. Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm. Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Morning!


At Sunset, become Tum and give the Sign of the God Shu Supporting the Sky:

Hail unto Thee who art Tum in Thy setting, even unto Thee who art Tum in Thy joy, who travellest over the Heavens in Thy bark at the Down-going of the Sun. Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm. Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Day!


At Midnight, become Khephra and give the Sign the Goddess Auramoth:

Hail unto thee who art Khephra in Thy hiding, even unto Thee who art Khephra in Thy silence, who travellest over the Heavens in Thy bark at the Midnight Hour of the Sun. Tahuti standeth in His splendour at the prow, and Ra-Hoor abideth at the helm. Hail unto Thee from the Abodes of Evening!


The Adoration:

Unity uttermost showed!

 I adore the might of Thy breath,

Supreme and terrible God,

 Who makest the gods and death

To tremble before Thee—

 I, I adore thee! 

Appear on the throne of Ra!

In Thelema, we have a practice that before every meal, rather than say a blessing, we do what is called Saying Will. The script for Saying Will within a group Is below and is followed by the script for Saying Will alone.

Saying Will with a Group:

Leader: (Knock with a knife 3-5-3)

Leader: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Everyone Else: What is thy Will?

Leader: It is my Will to eat and drink.

Everyone Else: To what end?

Leader: That my body may be fortified thereby.

Everyone Else: To what end?

Leader: That I may accomplish the Great Work.

Everyone Else: Love is the law, love under will!

Leader: (Knock once) Fall to.


Saying Will Solo:

You: (Knock with a knife 3-5-3) Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. It is my Will to eat and drink. That my body may be fortified thereby. That I may accomplish the Great Work. Love is the law, love under will! (Knock once) Fall to.


The Objective:

So why do we do this?

Here we have two quotes from Aleister Crowley from his book entitled Magick Without Tears as to the important of this seemingly minor daily practice:


“The point of [Saying Will] is to seize every occasion of bringing every available force to bear upon the objective of the assault [i.e. the accomplishment of the Great Work]. It does not matter what the force is (by any standard of judgment) so long as it plays its proper part in securing the success of the general purpose.”


“It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of performing these small ceremonies [i.e. Saying Will, Resh] regularly, and being as nearly accurate as possible with regard to the times... you must not mind snubbing your guest—or your host—if he or she should prove ignorant of his or her share of the dialogue. It is perhaps because these matters are so petty and trivial in appearance that they afford so excellent a training. They teach you concentration, mindfulness, moral and social courage, and a host of other virtues.”

The A∴A∴ is an organization whose heads have obtained by personal experience to the summit of Scientific Illuminism. They have founded a system by which every one can equally attain, and that with an ease and speed which was previously impossible.

The first grade in Their system is that of:

Study of these books will give a thorough grounding in the intellectual side of Their system.

After three months the Student is examined in these books, and if his knowledge of them is found satisfactory, he may become a Probationer, receiving Liber LXI and the secret holy book, Liber LXV. The principal point of this grade is that the Probationer has a master appointed, whose experience can guide him in his work.

He may select any practices that he prefers, but in any case must keep an exact record, so that he may discover the relation of cause and effect in his working, and so that the A∴A∴ may judge of his progress, and direct his further studies.

After a year of probation he may be admitted a Neophyte of A∴A∴, and receive the secret holy book Liber VII.

The Oath of a Probationer

I, _______________________ , being of sound mind and body, on this ____ day of _____________ [Anno ____ Sol in _______ ° of _______] do hereby resolve: in the Presence of _________________________, a Neophyte of the A∴A∴: To prosecute the Great Work: which is, to obtain a scientific knowledge of the nature and powers of my own being. May the A∴A∴ crown the work, lend me of Its wisdom in the work, enable me to understand the work! Reverence, duty, sympathy, devotion, assiduity, trust do I bring to the A∴A∴ and in one year from this date may I be admitted to the knowledge and conversation of the A∴A∴!

The Task of a Probationer

0. Let any person be received by a Neophyte, the latter being responsible to his Zelator.

1. The period of Probation shall be at least one year.

2. The aspirant to the A∴A∴ shall hear the Lection (Liber LXI) and this note of his office; IF HE WILL, shall then procure the robe of a Probationer; shall choose with deep forethought and intense solemnity a motto.

3. On reception he shall receive the robe, sign the form provided and repeat the oath as appointed, and receive the First Volume of the Book.

4. He shall commit a chapter of Liber LXV to memory; and furthermore, he shall study the Publications of the A∴A∴ in Class B, and apply himself to such practices of Scientific Illuminism as seemeth him good.

5. Beside all this, he shall perform any tasks that the A∴A∴ may see fit to lay upon him. Let him be mindful that the word Probationer is no idle term, but that the Brothers will in many a subtle way prove him, when he knoweth it not.

6. When the sun shall next enter the sign under which he hath been received, his initiation may be granted unto him. He shall keep himself free from all other engagements for one whole week from that date.

7. He may at any moment withdraw from his association with the A∴A∴ simply notifying the Neophyte who introduced him.

8. He shall everywhere proclaim openly his connection with the A∴A∴ and speak of It and Its principles (even so little as he understandeth) for that mystery is the enemy of truth.
One month before the completion of his year, he shall deliver a copy of the record to the Neophyte introducing, and repeat to him his chosen chapter of Liber LXV.

9. He shall hold himself chaste, and reverent toward his body, for that the ordeal of initiation is no light one. This is of peculiar importance in the last two months of his Probation.

10. Thus and not otherwise may he attain the great reward, YEA, MAY HE ATTAIN THE GREAT REWARD!

  16. 16. Lucien-Francois Jean-Maine - (1869 – 1960) Tau Ogdoade Orfeo I. Born on January 11, 1869 in Legoane, Haiti. He died in Boston in on April 30 (Valpurgis Night), 1960 while on a tour for the Gnostic groups in France, Spain, Belgium and the U.S.A., which were under his jurisdiction. Lucien-Francois Jean-Maine was consecrated to the episcopate in 1899 by Emmanuel Fabre des Essarts (Tau Synesium, the successor of Jules Doinel. Essarts had been consecrated by Gerard Encausse (Papus), Paul Sédir, and Lucien Mauchel). Lucien-Francois Jean-Maine was also consecrated by Paul Pierre de Marraga, mentioned above. At the age of 30 Lucien-Francois Jean-Maine choose the name Tau Ogdoade Orfeo I. In 1921 Lucien-Francois Jean-Maine consecrated his European heir in the Spanish-Gnostic Church, Martin Ortier de Sanchez y Marraga, known as Tau Ogdoade Orfeo II. BECAUSE we chose to celebrate the One True God within us All, the Light of the World, for each of us is a Star in the Company of Stars. Luminous, to light the way forward for all who are still buried beneath the sea.

 

BECAUSE we are the Living Expression of our Ancestors, and we demand we do better in their Honor. Their essence is of us, their lessons are learned of us, and together shall we create a vivid memory of Love Unbound.

 

BECAUSE we seek to honor the natural Sprites, Elements, and Energies all around us. We honor our place in the Cosmos and understand we are at our best when in tandem with the Sun and Moon.

 

BECAUSE as citizens of Gaia, we liberate ourselves within her arms and beneath her shade, that all Humankind shall know her love until the end of days.

 

BECAUSE we are working to establish non-hierarchical ways of existence in this world and beyond in hopes that each Star may make merry in every way one can dream of. We create thus we demand all systems and pacts be of the Highest for the Greatest of All.

 

BECAUSE we seek to create Revolution in our own lives every single day by envisioning and creating with Wonder, Lust, and Art.

 

BECAUSE I acknowledge that all Paths are Sacred and all Prophets true, so long as they understand a little. I acknowledge that Gnosis comes in many forms and what is True for me may not be True for another yet in this, there is no error.

 

BECAUSE I demand that I never cease to grow, that I never cease to learn, that I never cease to become more than who I was the day before. That I challenge myself to build a better community, to challenge intolerance within and without, and in effect, to enact Magick in the name of Lord of the Aeon.

 

BECAUSE I entrust my own folly for Human am I but Star nonetheless. To seek is to fail. To fly is to defy all odds. So thus must I defy gravity and manifest my own reality.

 

BECAUSE I sit beneath the white Rose of Har-pa-khered. I hold my own space, I honor my own might, and in the Lotus Blue, I guard my own Peace.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

 

“Every man and every woman is a star.” - AL I:3

 

When this line appeared in Liber AL vel Legis, it did not have any exceptions listed nor specific clauses for which it is not applicable. EVERY man and EVERY woman is a star, and as Aleister Crowley would add in his commentaries to Liber AL, every “intermediately sexed individual” (i.e. transgender) is as well. Each of us are all free to create, to live, to thrive, and to do our Wills as we will.

 

As Thelemistas, these words from our most sacred holy text should be some of the most meaningful. For in such simple words, the goddess Nuit has told us how she sees us and how we are to see every other member of the human race.

 

As Thelemistas, we have also been given a text that lists the rights of every Star. Once again, there are no exceptions given. These are the Rights of Man being humankind in the old language.

 

Sadly, these very rights have been denied to our Black and African American Siblings for far too long now. Yet, rather than exercise their right to kill those who would thwart them, they march, they kneel, they chant, they sing, and they let their voices be heard. So today I join them in their chants and Speak Their Names for we of Thelema stand against injustice and tyranny in all its forms.

 

To that point, we quote lines from Liber Oz and the names of those who were denied these rights. This list is in no way exhaustive but should serve simply as a launching point for further research and activism in our Thelemic communities.

 

“I will bring you to victory & joy: I will be at your arms in battle & ye shall delight to slay. Success is your proof; courage is your armour; go on, go on, in my strength; & ye shall turn not back for any!” AL III:46

 

So we go on, swords drawn, heads held high, as we battle the forces of tyranny and superstition. We fear nothing for Nu is our refuge as Had is our light. We Speak Their Names and give our all to their battle for their battle for freedom is our own.
